Equipment & Technology
Built for the demands of modern emergency communications.
NRV 911 operates out of the Montgomery County Public Safety Building in Christiansburg, Virginia, a facility purpose-built for 24/7 emergency operations. The technology inside is designed around one principle: when someone calls for help, nothing fails.
Communications Networks
NRV 911 maintains extensive telephone, data, and radio communications networks connecting every member agency across Blacksburg, Christiansburg, Virginia Tech, and Montgomery County.
Every network is engineered with built-in redundancy and automatic failover capabilities, meaning if one system is stressed or goes down, a backup takes over immediately. Our community doesn’t get a busy signal.
911 Call Handling
When a 911 call comes in, our computerized telephone system instantly displays the caller’s ID and location in real time, giving our telecommunicators critical information before the first word is spoken.
From there, a multi-channel radio dispatch console keeps telecommunicators in constant contact with police, fire, and rescue units from the moment they’re dispatched until the call is resolved.
CAD — Computer Aided Dispatch
CAD is the operational backbone of every shift. It manages the flow of incident information, tracks the status of every active unit in the field, and creates a real-time record of every call and response.
When our telecommunicators are coordinating multiple incidents simultaneously, CAD keeps everything organized and moving.
GIS — Geographic Information System
NRV 911’s GIS is a collaborative mapping effort maintained in active partnership with all member agencies.
Our system is regularly updated to reflect current road data, addresses, and landmarks. GIS mapping ensures that when a call comes in even from a rural road or an unmarked location our dispatchers can identify the location quickly and route the right resources accurately.
