FOIA: Rights & Responsibilities
FOIA: Rights & Responsibilities
The Virginia Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) guarantees citizens of the Commonwealth and representatives of the media access to public records held by the Authority. At NRV 911, we believe that an informed public is a safer public, and we are committed to the transparency required by law.
Your Rights as a Requester
- Access to Records: You have the right to request to inspect or receive copies of public records, or both.
- Timely Response: You have the right to receive a response to your request within five (5) working days.
- Cost Transparency: You have the right to receive an estimate in advance if the cost to produce the records is expected to exceed $200.
Our Responsibilities
- Providing Access: We must provide the records you requested unless they are subject to a specific legal exemption.
- Explaining Exemptions: If we withhold all or part of a record, we must provide a written explanation identifying the specific Code of Virginia section that allows the exemption.
- Reasonable Charges: We may make reasonable charges not to exceed our actual cost incurred in accessing, duplicating, supplying, or searching for the requested records.
How to Submit a Request
To ensure your request is handled as efficiently as possible, please use our FOIA request form here. While requests do not have to be in writing, a written request helps avoid misunderstandings and ensures a clear record of the inquiry.
